The Kiski Area School District is located northeast of metropolitan Pittsburgh in Westmoreland and Armstrong Counties. It was created in 1958 by the merger of Vandergrift, East Vandergrift, Allegheny Township, Bell Township/Avonmore and Parks Township Public Schools. In 1966, Washington Township Schools joined the Kiski Area School District. The district's northwestern extremity borders on the Allegheny River and the northeast political boundary of Allegheny County. In Westmoreland County, the district includes Allegheny, Washington, and Bell Townships, and the boroughs of Hyde Park, Vandergrift, East Vandergrift, Oklahoma, and Avonmore. All of these municipalities with the exception of Washington Township border the Kiskiminetas River, which is the north political boundary of Westmoreland County. Branching to the northeast, in Armstrong County and across the Kiskiminetas River, is Parks Township.
